Frustrated with the semi-final jinx, Fordham continued to qualify for the quarters and semis for the next four years. He finally broke all previous barriers and claimed his maiden world title in 2004 by knocking out former Masters champion who called the Steam Engine, Tony West, 3-0 initially and then a hard fought semi-final in which he came back out of nowhere, as he was down and out 0-3 and 2-4. Finally he pulled off a magical 5-4 victory. This match is considered to be one of the best matches in the history of the BDO. He claimed the title by defeating the King 6-3 in the finals.

However, ever since that victory, Hamilton has not won a single victory at Lakeside and his world rankings have dropped drastically. He had major health issues in past couple of years and after crashing out in the first round on two consecutive occasions in 2005 and 2006, he withdrew from competition in 2007 due to bad health. Finally he decided to make a comeback, but he chose the PDC over BDO as he had a bad time from 2005 to 2008 and he wishes to start fresh.

Looking at his personal life, Hamilton was known as the “Whippet” during school days on account of his agility and interest in track-and-field events. He supports Scottish football club the Rangers and was a player himself. On account of his awesome victory in 2004, he was nicknamed “The Viking” and only time can tell whether the Viking would ever be able to replicate such brilliant performance as that of the 2004 World Championship.
